So we took a weekend off to head up to the 2010 Wordcamp Convention in San Francisco and to meet Matt Mullenweg. Wordcamp is a traveling convention that deals with the future development of our most favorite open source content management system: WordPress.

So here is a quick recap. First off, under heavy pressure to take a more reliable form of transportation, we took the 1981 Vanagon. Our thoughts? Come on… its a road trip up the coast, what more appropriate yet daunting task would it be to take our hardly reliable Vanagon. Needless to say, we got there in style.

The convention was great, our staff was inspired and on the evening of the last day of the convention we were invited to the Automattic studio headquarters to meet some high class people in the internet world. The studio, which is located on Pier 38 in the heart of downtown San Francisco is a replica of our studio, except ‘times’ 3 million in coolness factor (but we will be there one day!)… did I mention it was on a pier in downtown San Francisco?? …oh wait I did. Needless to say, it was a hugely inspiring site to see, and above all the conference was a success. We met some incredible people, got connected with some great local businesses, and got the scoop on the latest releases of WordPress.

The Vanagon got us home safe (average speed 43mph on interstate 5… yikes!) but the important thing was: we looked sexy cruising that great California road in a 1981 Vanagon. We definitely look forward to seeing the guys at Automattic again next year!

Taken from the delicious blog of COMMANDmass, which in all honesty is beautiful like Marmite and butter on toast.

Mathematics brought form to the otherwise erratic motions of heavenly objects…

…and now in understanding the precision of human thought.

Mathematics prove the world and the universe we live in to be precise. We humans trust our calculations for mass and velocity so well, we put people in objects and blasted them towards a predictable soft-landing space on a hurling object 240,000 miles away (the moon). Mathematics teach and prove to us that the world and the stars above us are not just incalculable or random sets of complicated movements, but actually things we can predict, comprehend, and ultimately control.

The earliest principles of math probably developed as tools to understand the most primitive forms of commerce: arithmetic. If I traded a cow for two goats, a system of arithmetic had to be set in motion to understand the value of each asset. With the birth of land acquisition and private property, tools like geometry would be born as a means to measure the shape and dimension of surveyed land. Later, the enlightened thinkers would set out to understand the erratic and complicated motions of the heavenly bodies and planetary objects above us, this understanding would birth the mathematical principles of Calculus. Math has always been and will continue to always be a method to how we perceive the world and how we perceive our place in the world.

We believe another chapter is unfolding in the interplay between mathematics and how we understand our existence. Popular sciences like game theory, and social situation theory have all stated it as defining that human thought is not random, but a calculated and precise measure of the environment and circumstances around us. One of the most powerful proofs of this is the KeyWord Tracker Tool by Google, that actual tracks (and publishes) the quantity and quality of thoughts being searched upon from the 2 billion internet users daily. Apps like Pandora and Apple Genius are utilizing this power by undermining the syncopated rhythms of music, quantifying human thought and applying all that to an algorithm that can predict what new music you will be interested in. Our mathematics have gone beyond the understanding of objects in our universe and into understanding the precise and quantifiable thoughts in our heads.

The social power of the internet has allowed us the science, math and technology to embrace a whole new world of understanding others and ourselves. We think there has never been a greater time to exist, to be alive, and to ‘delve! build! mold!’ this new world we live in… that is the root of our passion, that is the root of why we love our work. We believe marketing and development should thoroughly explore this new chapter of understanding.

I want to tell you about a tool that will forever change your life, make you rich, allow you to work your dream job and turn your world completely upside down… But first, let me explain. For the last 10 million years or so (ever since our most primitive ancestors began to chisel tools from washed up whale bones to build hunting sticks and shelter) information has been the most valuable asset to human survival in our world of scarce resources. The blacksmith or the mason would pass along their valuable trade secrets generation after generation only to their offspring to ensure the ‘job security’ of their family. Terms like ‘unhappy with my current career choices’ or ‘looking for a new job’ didn’t exist; you valued the few secrets you knew because without them you and your family would starve… Information (job skills, cooking skills, shelter building skills) kept people alive.

Now fast forward to the world we live in today, and I want to introduce you to a tool that can give you all the information you need to achieve whatever you could ever want out of life. This tool not only contains almost every byte of information ever conceived in human thought, but it’s also giving it away for FREE. You might have heard of it: Google. For anyone interested in becoming whatever they want to become, Google has abolished any borders to entry. That’s right… want to become an artist? Google it. Want to start a business? Google it. I could go on all day but the point is clear: there is access to ALL THE WORLD’s INFORMATION STREAMING RIGHT INTO YOUR BEDROOM. Hello??? There is no excuse to hating your job or being unfulfilled, for the first time in history you have full open access to every bit of information that is going to make you an expert at whatever YOU want to be an expert at (and not whatever your family line gave you to be an expert at). Be your own business! Take what you love, write your own plan, google how to build a website for yourself, google how to be your own accountant, google ideas to market your product, google consumer information, google to find people to help… Feeling a lack of confidence or security? google tips to build self-confidence. Feeling lack of motivation or amibition? google tips to get you going… I could go on, but you get the point. There is no argument, there is no excuse… for the first time in human history we actually live in an age where if you want something all you have to do is reach out and grab it (literally).

“This goes out to all my people starting businesses, doing what you love.” -new dork

…Oh yes, and having a social group to turn to is important to… You are always welcome to come to the studio to share inspiration, ideas, etc. Let’s build all sorts of million dollar businesses and party on a boat with P.Diddy next summer. Welcome to the brightest moment in human history.
