The Power of Vision

Friday, March 19th, 2010

I think the natural progression for the ways we think start in a very abstract realm before making their way into fruition. The ‘idea’ is far-fetched, conceptual, and for the most part the bridge that will pragmatically fuse that great idea into a standard commodity is often only supplemented by the dream of the initial visionary. …But that visionary takes action, and slowly but surely extracts that which is conceptual and abstract, into that which is daily life. I am fascinated by the art of ‘vision.’ I love reading stories of things we take for granted like the telephone or the light bulb and how the inventors of such things had so much opposition in selling the functionality of ideas our society would one day be dependent on. I laugh at the things that may be under our noses right now, that we continue to ignore or remain unaware of, that will one day be things future societies are dependent on. In so many ways we trudge blindly into the future except for those few visionaries that light the way. So let’s celebrate the abstract, the wild, or the weird… for the Earth contains limitless possibilities and you can never know what new great ‘idea’ is going to sweep over the world.

I love what the team at ThePlastiki.com is doing. Here is a small group of people audaciously undertaking a massively abstract project that has vital importance to our world. I admire not only the vision but the proof that action causes vision to come to life. I think this project is something that will lay the groundwork for ideas that make us more aware of our actions in the wonderful world we live in.

Congrats on the Fulbright LV!

from the forever monumental CommandMass blog, which stands at the end of the world and looks after us all… (ok, I’m getting a bit weird with this.)

LV with the AG… why are we not surprised…

The beauty of working and being surrounded by world class people, is that everyday I am constantly inspired to push and better myself to be the best I can be. The drawback however, is when they have to leave for global projects like a Fulbright in Brazil. Case in point: this week LV was awarded her Fulbright to conduct and oversee a public health project she created herself to assist in poverty stricken areas surrounding São Paulo. Lauren will be leaving us early next year to spend time imploring dynamic work in South America. But hey, as whitman says,

“The inducements shall be greater;
We will sail pathless and wild seas!
We will go where winds blow, waves dash, and the Yankee clipper speeds by under full sail.

With power, liberty, the earth, the elements!
Health, defiance, gayety, self-esteem, curiosity;
From all formulas!” -w

Keep pushing the limits of what you’re capable of, and all the inducements that follow can only be greater… That’s our policy, and we are sticking to it.. So congrats LV, we knew your brilliance would pay off, and that you had it in the bag the whole time!

“I and mine, do not convince by argument simile or rhyme, we convince by our presence.” -a little more Whitman for you (Just had to throw that out).

What is the Plastiki?

Friday, March 19th, 2010

I just stumbled upon this project (thanks to my dear friend Sean Woolsey). The Plastiki is a project that was started in 2006 by David De Rothschild in response to a UN report of the ’8th Continent’ which exists as a floating pile of human waste that is the size of Texas. The project has been almost four years in the making, but David and his crew have built a catamaran completely out of plastic bottles to sail to this land of waste, and then onto Sydney to raise awareness and showcase how we can think differently about turning waste into resources. Check out their website: ThePlastiki.com and track them as they leave for Sydney in the next few days.

“We hopefully will highlight the fact that maybe plastic isn’t to blame; but really, it is our inability to understand the material, how we use it, what we are using it for and more importantly, how we dispose of it, so that it doesn’t end up in our oceans. As a species, we are totally dependent on the vitality of our natural environment and without that, we cannot live on this planet.”

I’m hugely inspired… best of luck Plastiki!

What Teacher’s Make

My beloved sister Molli Patterson shared this on her facebook wall the other day, and I felt compelled to share. I love this and think it is so important (especially in our current economic times) to remember how important our teachers are to us. Recently I was fired from a job (will not state any names here but no shock value intended… it has happened quite a number of times…) for a dispute with a client of the company I was working for… Her “teacher” remarks were very similar to the mocking references in this video, my rebuttal was similar to Taylor’s, and my conviction was a bit much for the company… oh well, the big bad client got what they deserved, the company lost a great employee, and CMDmass.com was born… So we all win. Thank you teachers and thank you Molli for sharing this.

Thanks for the inspiring work: Taylor Mali.

Rob Bryanton’s popular animation about “a new way of thinking about time and space.” If you have not seen this, prepare to have your brain explode by about 6:48. Bryanton shows off a very thought provoking argument about string theory. I had this one for a couple years now, but felt I had to share. Do learn more at tenthdimension.com. Buy the book and let me know your thoughts (then I recommend going and buying “Stalking the Wild Pendulum: On the Mechanics of Consciousness ” by Itzhak Bentov) ..DISCLAIMER, your brain may enter into content overload and implode on itself… I’m still recovering.

(and thank you to Mr. Bryanton and the late Mr. Bentov for being amazingly inquisitive into understanding our brilliant universe.)

This video has been out a couple years but I had to throw it up here. I know it is a little long, but I assure you Annie Leonard does an amazing job getting an incredibly important point across. Check out the website StoryofStuff.com to learn more information. There is quite a heated debated about this topic, so I would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for stopping by…
